Background

One of our customers produces printed HDPE film products. During production, approximately 10% of the film carries printed patterns, while the remaining 90% is transparent. Like most film manufacturers, this factory generates a significant amount of trim and offcut waste every day.

The challenge: traditional granulators produce dark, low-gloss pellets from printed film, because the heating process burns off the ink and degrades the polymer. The customer needed a solution that could recover near-virgin quality pellets from this mixed printed/clean film waste stream.

The Comparison: Traditional vs. PANDA MACHINERY

We provided the customer with sample pellets produced by both a conventional heating granulator and our cold-friction granulator. The difference was immediately visible:

Property Traditional Granulator PANDA MACHINERY Granulator
Pellet Color Dark, dull Close to virgin material
Surface Gloss No gloss — looks "dead" Strong gloss, preserved properties
Blown Film Quality Bubbles and spots appear No bubbles, no spots
Process Heating → melt → strand → cut Cold friction, no heating, no water
Environmental Impact Emits odors, requires water cooling No wastewater, no exhaust gas

Why Traditional Granulators Produce Poor-Quality Pellets

Problem 1: Color Degradation and Loss of Gloss

In a traditional granulator, the heating process changes the fundamental properties of the plastic. The color shift is not just a surface reflection issue — the polymer itself undergoes thermal oxidation, permanently altering its appearance and mechanical properties.

Problem 2: Uneven Color and Inconsistent Quality

During extrusion, if the thrust force or feed rate is not maintained at a constant level, the melt temperature and residence time vary. This leads to inconsistent pellet color — some pellets are darker, others lighter — which is unacceptable for high-quality blown film production.

Our Technology: Cold-Friction Granulation

PANDA MACHINERY granulators work on a completely different principle:

✅ The result: pellets that are virtually indistinguishable from virgin material — suitable for blending at ratios up to 100% in blown film applications.

Conclusion

For film manufacturers dealing with printed or mixed-color waste, traditional granulators simply cannot deliver the pellet quality required for high-end applications. Our cold-friction technology bridges this gap — producing pellets that are cleaner, glossier, and mechanically superior, all while being more environmentally friendly.
