What Is a Plastic Granulator?
Plastic is deeply woven into daily life. From shopping bags and food packaging to industrial film and medical devices, plastic products are everywhere. As environmental awareness grows, reducing plastic use and recycling waste plastic have become global priorities.
A plastic granulator (also called a plastic recycling machine) is the core equipment that makes plastic recycling possible. It converts waste plastic โ in the form of film, rigid scraps, or factory offcuts โ into uniform pellets that can be fed directly back into production lines.
โป๏ธ Recycled pellets can typically be blended at 30%โ100% with virgin material for blown film, injection molding, and pipe extrusion โ making granulation one of the highest-ROI investments for any plastic factory.
What Materials Can Be Recycled?
Almost all thermoplastic materials can be recycled and re-granulated. The most common categories include:
- PE (Polyethylene): LDPE, LLDPE, and HDPE are the most widely recycled materials, used in film, bags, and containers.
- PP (Polypropylene): Woven bags, BOPP film, non-woven fabrics, and rigid containers.
- PVC: Soft and rigid PVC scrap from profiles, cables, and sheets.
- ABS / PS: Engineering plastics from electronic housings and consumer goods.
- TPU / EVA: Specialty materials used in medical devices and footwear.
- Biodegradable plastics: PLA, PBAT, and PCL โ the fastest-growing segment in the recycling market.
How Does a Granulator Work?
Traditional Heating Granulation
Most conventional granulators use a heating process: plastic is melted at high temperature, then extruded into strands, cooled in water, and cut into pellets. While effective, this approach has drawbacks โ the heating process can degrade the material's physical properties, and the resulting pellets often have a darker color due to ink burning and thermal oxidation.
Cold Friction Granulation (Our Technology)
PANDA MACHINERY's granulators use a cold-friction process that requires no external heating and no water cooling. The machine generates heat purely through physical friction between the screw and the material, plasticizing the melt without overheating. The result is:
- Pellets that closely match virgin material color
- No thermal degradation of physical properties
- No wastewater discharge โ fully environmentally friendly
- Cold start capability โ no preheating required
Who Supplies Plastic Granulators?
Granulator manufacturers are concentrated in Asia and Europe. Chinese manufacturers โ particularly in theZhangzhou/Quanzhou region of Fujian Province โ have become global leaders in cost-effective, high-reliability recycling machinery. PANDA MACHINERY (Fujian Quanzhou Xinshangda Machinery Co., Ltd.) is proud to be part of this cluster, serving customers in 50+ countries with our patented cold-friction technology.
Choosing the Right Machine for Your Factory
When selecting a granulator, consider these key factors:
- Material type: Film, rigid, or fibrous? Each requires different screw designs.
- Contamination level: Clean offcuts vs. dirty post-consumer waste โ wet granulators may be required.
- Output requirement: Our machines range from 100 kg/hr to 600 kg/hr.
- Energy cost: Our cold-friction design consumes approximately 280 kWยทh per ton of pellets.
